Grammar secure home win

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Larne Grammar 1st XI played Regent on Saturday 22nd November.
LGS 1st XI 1. Regent 0.

After last weeks 4 - 1 over Bloomfield, LGS 1st XI was determined to secure another win at home. They knew that it was going to be a hard match, but after a team talk before the match, the team spirits were high.
In the first half both teams came out very strong. LGS however proved to be the better team and Courtney Burns hitting the ball into the circle, Lauren Kerr sweeping the ball into the back of the net.
Regent had some breaks but LGS defence stepped up with great defending by Sacha Boyd, Rebecca Dulton, Leigh Snoddy and Suzan McDowell.
The score remained 1 - 0 to LGS at the end of the first half.
After half time Larne had some good chances with Lauren Bell and Ruth Dalton making runs and Roslyn Grey winning corners that went just wide of the net. With both teams battling and creating chances the score remained 1 - 0 to LGS to the final whistle.
This is LGS fifth win at home and it looks very promising for their future plate match in December.
A special mention goes to Player of the Match Sacha Boyd.
LGS 1st XI: L O'Toole, L Snoddy, R Dalton, S Mc Dowell, S Boyd, C Burns, R Dalton, R Grey, K Boyle, L Kerr, A Kerr, C Jamison, L Bell.
LGS 2nd XI
Larne Grammar 2XI 0
Regent House 2XI 0
Larne Grammar 2X1 played Regent House at home on Saturday.
During the first half, Regent showed a very strong side gaining various opportunities within our circle, however through a solid back line composed of Samantha Evans, Megan McCauley and Yasmin Boyd, all of these opportunities were well cleared.
The first half remained goalless.
Within the second half however, our work effort picked up and Regent rarely had the chance to maintain the ball within our circle.
Larne had much possession of the ball showing good passing skills leading to great runs and opportunities by Kirsten McCully and Jordanne Finch.
However Regent refused to let us score. With many penalty corners gained by Larne, it was frustrating to see the final score at 0 - 0.
Team: Caroline Duff, Yasmin Boyd, Sarah Moore, Rebecca Braniff, Samantha Evans, Kim Moxham (capt), Rachael McKeen, Louisa Garrett, Megan McCauley, Jordanne Finch, Patricia Leitch, Louisa Garrett, Kirsten McCully
U14
ON Saturday 22nd November Larne's U14 played away at Regent.
Larne won pass back and managed to complete a number of strong push passes into Regent's half before Regent intercepted and brought the ball into Larne's circle were they scored the first goal of the match.
Unfortunately due to a knee injury Amy Beggs had to be taken off, so Johanna Johnston was moved to left wing and Laura McMurtry came on to play left back.
Despite the cold weather Larne stayed determined and tried to get a goal to equalise. Carla Montgomery and Eden Wilson worked well on the right half of the pitch driving the ball forward putting Regent's defence under pressure.
Regent got down to Larne's circle and were determined to get the ball in the net but Larne stayed just as determined, but unfortunately for Larne a Regent player got it and sweeped the ball into the left hand corner of the net.
A penalty corner was awarded just before half time but this was defended well by Larne's defence leaving the score 2 - 0 at half time.
Larne came back on focussed, and straight away Larne's centre forward Kim McCallum rushed in a completed an excellent block tackle but Regent kept strong and tried to drive the ball down to Larne's circle.
Johanna Johnston jabbed at the ball and made an excellent run eager to get Larne a goal but it just skimmed the post.
Regent took a hit out and quickly passed the ball up the pitch but Sarah Johnston was on hand clearing the ball up the right side of the pitch. A huddle of players rushed to the ball but a Regent player slipped through and came down and scored there third and final goal.
Team: S Coulter, J Swann, S Johnston, L McMurtry, J Johnston, C McGookin, C McIlwaine, E Wilson, A Begg, K McCallum, C Montgomery, H Hill.
Larne Grammar 3XI
LGS 1
Regent House 2
LARNE Grammar 3X1 team took on Regent House. Our coach, Sarah Russell, decided to put our right wing, Jannah Johnston, in left back, which was a big move but Jannah played well in this position.
The first goal of the match was scored by Regents 10 minutes into the first half from a penalty corner going in from the right hand post.
The second goal, also by Regents, was again scored from a powerful shot from the top of the circle hitting the backboard at the left hand side 15 minutes into the match.
No more goals were scored in the remaining five minutes of the half.
After and encouraging talk from our coach we went into the second half with our heads held high.
About 10 minutes into the second half, played stopped because of an injury to Marie Ferguson.
Although there were many chances by both teams no goals were scored until the last five minutes that a goal was scored by Larne Grammar's Zoe Buchannan. Both teams played well but it was a narrow defeat for LGS.
